Nara was once the ancient capital of Japan, and visitors are apt to be very impressed by the 5-story pagoda on the grounds of Kofukuji Temple and the huge statue of Budda at Todaiji Temple. The delicate aesthetics unique to Japan are clearly expressed in the way the reflection of the pagoda is cast on the Sarusawa Pond in the front garden of the temple grounds, along with the deep hues of the surrounding greenery. An early evening ascent of Mt. Wakakusa provides an impressive view, one that may be considered to contain an essential element of Japanese aesthetics. The great image of Buddha at Todaiji Temple illustrates the importance of the Buddhist culture in Japan.
