How to use Easy Web Browsing

Notes on using Easy Web Browsing
  1. Easy Web Browsing is only available while you are using the Internet.
  2. The first time you use Easy Web Browsing, it may take some time to download. When you start it again, it is ready to use immediately.
    (Download :  To transmit data to personal computers via the Internet)
  3. Easy Web Browsing can read in various languages, but it takes some time before the reading starts if you move to a page in a particular language for the first time. Please wait while the preparation for reading takes place. The page will be usable immediately the second time you use it and thereafter.


Magnifying and Reading Text

  1. Move the mouse pointer to the text that you want to be magnified. The text is gradually magnified from the beginning of the paragraph, and reading begins. You do not have to click the mouse.
    (Click :  Pressing the left button one time. )

  2. The magnification window shows the section of the Web page where the mouse pointer is pointing. This portion will be read out loud.

  3. The text will be read continuously until the end of the paragraph, at which point it stops.

Notes on Easy Web Browsing Reading

  1. Each paragraph is read from the beginning to the end.
    Easy Web Browsing cannot read only one sentence in a paragraph or from the middle of a paragraph.

  2. If you point to a paragraph, reading begins from the beginning of that paragraph.
    You do not need to point the mouse to the beginning of the paragraph.

  3. Do not move the mouse while Easy Web Browsing is magnifying or reading text.
    Reading will stop if you move the mouse, and the reading portion will be switched to the new portion.

    • Responses may be delayed if you are reading a frame, long page, etc.
    • Some pages may not be readable.

Operating Easy Web Browsing - Other Options

Linking to Other Pages
Move the mouse to a link and click it. When the mouse pointer is reshaped to look like a hand, that represents a link.
(Click :  Pressing the left button one time. )
When the link is displayed on a menu...

To return to the first page.
Click the Home button to display the page that came immediately after startup.

To return to the page before the current one.
Click the Back button to display the page that came before the current page.

Stopping the Reading.
Click the Stop button.

Quitting Easy Web Browsing.
Click the Exit button. Easy Web Browsing stops speaking and magnifying text.

Setting Easy Web Browsing Options

You can change Easy Web Browsing speech rates, screen display sizes, and color settings, using buttons on the upper portion of the screen. Changed settings are not changed until the next time you start Easy Web Browsing.

Changing Easy Web Browsing's Speech Rate.
Click the Rate buttons to adjust the speech rate in 5 steps.
  • Speech slows each time you click ↓
  • Speech quickens each time you click↑

Changing Easy Web Browsing's Speech Volume.
Click the Volume buttons to adjust the speech loudness in 5 steps.
  • Volume gets quieter each time you click↓
  • Volume gets louder each time you click ↑

If these buttons are not displayed, you can display them by opening the setting panel from the Setting button and unchecking "Display Reading Preparation Status." For details, read The Speech Function in Making Advanced Settings (for Power Users).

Enable or disable continuous reading mode
Click the Page button to enable continuous reading mode. Click the button again to disable it.

("Page": Read out the document and the links in the page contiously till the end of the page. The highlighted text moves in sync with the reading text.)

Changing the Screen Display Size
You can adjust the screen display size within the range of 50% to 600% by clicking the Out button, In button.
  • The size becomes larger in the following order:
    50 → 75 → 100 → 125 → 150 → 175 → 200 → 300 → 400 → 600% each time you click In)
  • The size becomes smaller in the following order:
    600 → 400 → 300 → 200 → 175 → 150 → 125 → 100 → 75 → 50% each time you click Out)

Reset zoom rate to 100%
Click the "100%" button to reset zoom rate to 100%.

Set space between lines wider
Click the Space buttons to adjust the line space in 5 steps.
  • Space becomes narrower each time you click ↓
  • Space becomes wider each time you click↑

Enable or disable ruler mode
Click the Ruler button to display the ruler. Click the button again disable it.
Ruler button
The color, type, and width of the ruler can be set on the "Ruler Settings" panel. Open the advanced settings panel for "Others" by clicking the page-turning button at the right bottom corner of each operation panel. For details on how to change advanced settings, plese see this.

When Easy Web Browsing is launched for the first time, "Magenta" is selected as the initial setting.

Changing the Style
"Style" button The style determines the foreground and background colors.
Click the Style button to cycle through these options.

Click the Setting button for more detailed settings. For details, read Color Settings in Changing Easy Web Browsing Advanced Settings (for Power Users).
Style The following pictures show each style. The order shown is the order in which screen colors change each time you press the Style button.
  1. Black text on a white background with blue for links for normal display,
  2. Yellow text on a blue background with white for links,
  3. Black text on a light yellow background with blue for links,
  4. Yellow text on a black background with white for links.

Printing
"Print" button

You can print out the page you are currently browsing by clicking the Print button. Printing starts immediately after you click the button.

If you want to change the printer settings, use the Windows Settings or Control Panel.
When a page that consists of frames is printed out, the frames will be printed out in the order shown in the following example.

  • If you want to change the printer settings, change the Windows printer settings in advance.
  • If you have changed the screen style or magnified a portion of the Web page, printing may not be done correctly. We recommend that you print a page when the sytle is set on normal display with no magnification.

  • When a page that consists of frames is printed out, the frames will be printed out in the order shown in the following example.
(Frame: A way of configuring a page by partitioning one window into several areas and displaying separate contents in each area.)

Using the Keyboard
(Please read this section only if you want to manipulate the buttons via the keyboard.)
  • Shift the focus between the operation panel and the page display section by pressing the Alt key

    If you press the Alt key when the focus on the page display section, the focus shifts to the operation panel.
    If you press the Alt key when the focus is on the operation panel, the focus shifts to the page display section.

  • Alt Key Operations

    Move the mouse to the upper operation panel and click an area other than buttons to start keyboard operations.
    Then, press a key in the following list to select the button you want:
    • Alt + 1: Top
    • Alt + 2: Back
    • Alt + 3: Stop
    • Alt + 4: Rate↓
    • Alt + 5: Rate↑
    • Alt + 6: Volume↓
    • Alt + 7: Volume↑
    • Alt + 8: Zoom↓
    • Alt + 9: Zoom↑
    • Alt + C: Style
    • Alt + P: Print
    • Alt + S: Setting
    • Alt + 0(Zero): Exit

    To indicate that the button has been selected, it will be surrounded by an orange frame. Press Enter or the Spacebar to perform the button's function.

    Letter keys are not case-sensitive. Upper and lowercase letters both work.
    You cannot use the keyboard to close the setting panel. Click the Exit button.
    You can also use the Tab key to select buttons.
  • Using the Tab Key
    Click an area other than the operation buttons by moving the mouse to the upper portion of the buttons.
    Each time you press the Tab key, a button is selected in the order listed below. If you hold the Shift key while pressing Tab, a selection is made in the opposite order.
    Top → Back → Stop → Rate↓ → Rate↑ → Volume↓ → Volume↑ → Page → Button for setting panel → Zoom↓ → Zoom↑ → 100% → Button for setting panel → Space↓ → Space↑ → Ruler → Style → Button for setting panel → Print → Setting → Help → Exit
    The selected button is indicted by an orange frame. Press Enter or the Spacebar to perform the button's function.
    • You cannot close the setting panel by using keys. To close the panel, press the Exit button in the setting panel.

Moving the Reading Position within a Paragraph
When a long paragraph is being read out loud, you can move the reading position to the top or end of the paragraph or to the immediately preceding character string or the next one by pressing an arrow key while holding down the Ctrl key.

Pressing the Ctrl key + up arrow key returns the reading position to the top of the paragraph.
Pressing the Ctrl key + down arrow key advances the reading position to the end of the paragraph.
Pressing the Ctrl key + left arrow key returns the reading position to the immediately preceding character string.
Pressing the Ctrl key + right arrow key advances the reading position to the next character string.

When the focus is not in the area displaying a page, this function cannot be used. To apply the focus to the area displaying a page, click anywhere in the page (such as the margin) other than links.

Changing Easy Web Browsing Advanced Settings

Various other functions are available with Easy Web Browsing so that you can enjoy network surfing more conveniently and comfortably. For details on how to change advanced settings, please see this.
You do not need to read this section for ordinary operations.

Browser

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0, 7.0, or 8.0 is required.

You can check the version you are using by accessing Internet Explorer Help, About. If your version is not compatible, you can upgrade to a later version via the Internet.

Working with PDF Files

To display PDF files, one of the following software applications (PDF Viewer) must be installed and properly set to normally display PDF files with Internet Explorer.
There are two types of installation for Acrobat Reader full version and not-full (normal) version.
Follow the below steps to confirm the version. If you find you have not installed a full version, uninstall the current Acrobat Reader and install a full version.
  1. Start Acrobat Reader.
  2. Open "help" menu from the toolbar.
  3. Choose "About Adobe Plug-Ins".
  4. Make sure that the following plug-ins are registered in the newly opened "About Adobe Plug-Ins" window.
    • Acrobat Accessibility
    • Make Accessible

To work with PDF files, the "Display PDF in browser" option should be "on".
From the "Edit" menu of the Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat, select "Preferences"-"Internet"-"Web Browser Options", and check the "Display PDF in browser" checkbox.

The following conditions are required when using Easy Web Browsing.

Problems and solutions

User authority

When Windows XP or Windows 2000 or Windows Vista/7 is used:  
When you use Easy Web Browsing, your user authority needs to be administrator authority. If you have logged onto the personal computer being currently used with user authority other than administrator authority, please use Easy Web Browsing after logging in again as a user with administrator authority.

The initial download fails before completion.

If you are using firewall software for anti-virus protection of your PC, your initial download may fail before completion depending on the setting of the firewall software. Check the setting of the firewall software.

Text is not read out loud

If after a page has been displayed, the page is not read out loud even though you have moved the mouse to a point where you want reading to begin, it may be attributable to one of the following reasons:

A. The speech program is being downloaded.

Reading does not start while there is the display "Downloading" in the operation panel. Please try again after the downloading has been completed.

B. On the setting screen, one or both of the checkboxes "Automatically enable speech when TTS is available" and "Enable speech sound" are unchecked.

Please check and do the setting, if necessary, through the following steps:

  1. Display the setting screen by clicking the Setting button in the operation panel.
  2. Display the "Speech sound" function by clicking "Speech".
  3. If one or both of the checkboxes "Automatically enable speech when TTS is available" and "Enable speech sound" are unchecked, check the boxes by clicking them.
  4. Press the "Close" button to close the setting screen.
When the speaker volume setting in Windows is mute: 
The checking of the checkboxes will be followed by the display "The audio device is mute. Do you want to activate audio?". Select Yes. (If you select No, the checkbox becomes off. Check the box again to enable the speaker.)

C. The page is written in a language for which Easy Web Browsing is not ready.

If a page opened is written in a language for which Easy Web Browsing is not ready, it is not read out loud.

D. When a problem is in the page structure, or a page cannot be loaded correctly:

Refeshing the page by clicking "F5" key may enable reading.

Sound effect is inactive

If sound effect is inactive, it may be attributable to either of the following reasons:

A. On the setting screen, Selection of Sound Effect is Mute.

Please check and do the setting, if necessary, through the following steps:

  1. Display the setting screen by clicking the "Setting" button in the operation panel.
  2. Display the "Sound effect" function by clicking "Others".
  3. If "None" is selected in Selection of "Sound effect type", select any other, such as "Sound 1", by clicking it.
  4. Press the "Close" button to close the setting screen.

B. In the speaker volume setting in Windows, the SW Synthesizer (or MIDI) setting is mute.

  1. From the Windows start menu, select the control panel.
  2. (With Windows XP) Select Sound, Voice, Audio Device, and then select Adjust System Sound Volume.
  3. On the Sound and Audio Device Property screen, press the Advanced Setting button for Device Sound Volume.
  4. In the Master Sound Volume window, uncheck (turn off) Mute for SW Synthesizer(or MIDI) and set the volume to a proper level.
  5. Close all open windows

Reading preparation is not completed (The reading voice software cannot be downloaded)

If you are using firewall software, the reading voice software may not be downloaded. If this is the case, please check the setting of the firewall software

Speech response is slow.

Responses may be delayed a little, or it may take time before speech starts, depending on Web page configuration.
Please wait a little until responses are made after you move the mouse.

Speech is not correct.

Speech errors may occur depending on the sentence that is read.
This happens because the voice synthesis engine of Easy Web Browsing is not compatible.

Speech omits some portion of a page. Easy Web Browsing speaks text not pointed to by the mouse pointer.

Some pages do not allow speech depending on page layout.

(Page layout: Represents page configuration, and ways of creating pages)

Reading ignores the designated speech point.

Pages cannot be read if the page contains text that is coded with HTML. This can happen in a case such as a page containing the contents of a mail magazine. A page must be read as a block from the beginning to the end at all times, irrespective of a point that is designated on that page.

(Mail magazine: Magazine that is regularly issued to subscribers via e-mails.)
(HTML: Language used to build and display Internet pages.

Operation buttons and the setting panel have disappeared.

If Easy Web Browsing has been used for a long time, the button display may disappear in while you are browsing. Click any vacant point on the button or in the setting panel.

When the screen is magnified, the page layout is corrupted

Depending on a page configuration, a page layout may be substantially corrupted when a page is magnified. Please note that this is due to the way the page is created.

A change of style is not reflected after the page is moved.

A response may be delayed a little, or it may take time to adjust a style or screen magnification, depending on page configuration.
Please wait while the change in style is reflected.

Responses are slow when pages or a magnification rate is changed

When responses are slow, you can quicken processing by setting "No Adjustment" for "Scrollbar width" as follows:
  1. Display the setting screen by pressing the "Setting" button.
  2. Click "Layout" to display "Scrollbar width" function.
  3. With "Scrollbar width", select "No Adjustment" by clicking it.
  4. Press "Close" to close the setting screen.

Character strings cannot be selected with the mouse

To enable the selection of character strings with the mouse, do the following setting:

Note : With this setting, no reading is done.

  1. Display the setting screen by pressing the "Setting" button.
  2. Display the "Magnification" function by clicking "Screen".
  3. Turn off "magnify reading text" by unchecking it.
  4. Display the "Speech sound" function by clicking "Speech".
  5. Turn off "Enable speech sound" by unchecking it.
  6. Click "Other" to display "Mouse" function.
  7. Turn off "Enable mouse dragging scroll" by unchecking it.
  8. Press "Close" to close the setting screen.

Easy Web Browsing aborted with an error display.

Restart Internet Explorer. If your PC does not respond, please turn it off and restart.

A page that should be open is not visible

If a page that should be open is not visible, it may be attributable to either of the following reasons:

A. The page is hidden behind the current page : 

Depending on timing, a page opened may be hidden behind the previous page. In cases like this, please try pressing the Tab key while holding down the Alt key. The intended page will appear after a number of tries.

B. The page cannot be opened because of the pop-up blocking function of Internet Explorer : 

With Windows XP SP2, the Google toolbar, or the like, Internet Explorer has a pop-up blocking function that automatically closes a page opened. Please temporarily clear these functions so that the intended page can be opened.

A page pop-up window is not displayed in front.

A pop-up window is not displayed in front even if it is opened.
Click the Back button.

(Window :An independent and small screen that is prepared at the startup of a program. An image and document are displayed on such screen.)
(Pop-up: To open a new window automatically and display separate contents. Or such window.)

Cannot return to the previous page from a pop-up window.

On some pages, returning to the previous page is not possible from the pop-up window.
In this case, please restart by clicking the Default button, or return to the previous page by clicking the Back button three times or more.

A small window cannot be maximized when two or more pop-up windows are opened.

One of the pop-up windows may not be maximized.
If you want to close this pop-up window, click the Close button on that page or, close the pop-up window by clicking x on the upper right corner of the window.

The magnified part moved upward incorrectly after the PC recovered from standby conditions.

When the PC is recovered from standby conditions, the text magnification part may move upward incorrectly.
In this case, please restart Easy Web Browsing.

(Standby: Conditions in which nothing is displayed on the screen by retaining the conditions immediately before the PC is turned off for the purpose of saving power consumption.)

Easy Web Browsing aborted because software that automatically closes pop-up ads was being used at the same time.

If you use software that automatically closes pop-up advertisements together with Easy Web Browsing, browsing may abort when the pop-up ads are closed. In that case, exit the software that automatically closes pop-up ads, and do not use it with Easy Web Browsing.

With Internet Explorer or other software, the toolbar is not displayed in place

When you are using a screen mode other than full screen, the toolbar and others of Internet Explorer and software started at the same time may be displayed out of place. To display them in place, please do the setting "No Adjustment" for "Scrollbar width":

  1. Display the setting screen by pressing the "Setting" button.
  2. Click "Screen" to display "Layout" function.
  3. With "Scrollbar width", select "No adjustment" by clicking it.
  4. Press "Close" to close the setting screen.

The start icon is not created on the desktop

If you are using security software, it may block the automatic creation of shortcuts on the desktop. Please check the settings of your security software.

How to uninstall from client PC

In Windows 2000/XP

When the main Easy Web Browsing (not including voice synthesis programs) is installed on a client PC, program files, setting files, and temporary files are saved to the following directories:

%ProgramFiles%\IBM\WebRD
(Example: C:\Program Files\IBM\WebRD)

%APPDATA%\WebRD (Windows2000 or higher)
(Example: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\WebRD)

Note: The Application Data directory maybe invisible in Windows Explorer because the default property is hidden. If so, please input %APPDATA%WebRD in address bar directly.
To uninstall Easy Web Browsing from a client system, first uninstall all voice synthesis programs. Then delete all the files related to Easy Web Browsing and the startup icon on the desktop.

The below are the steps of uninstall in Windows XP.

The deletion of Voice synthesis engine program

Go into [Control panel]-->[Add or Remove Programs] and delete the following applications.
(If it is being used by the system, you may not be able to delete it. If you are using IBM ViaVoice TTS with other applications, do not delete it.)

Delete the Executable files

Delete the startup icon on the desktop for running Easy Web Browsing
Delete the directory of %ProgramFiles%\IBM\WebRD (e.g. C:\Program Files\IBM\WebRD)

Delete the setting files

Delete %APPDATA%\WebRD of every user. (For example: in the case of Administrator, delete the files under the folder of C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\WebRD)

Delete the plug-in

Go through the following steps to delete the ActiveX plug-in WebRDC.dll (WebRDCtl Class) in Internet Explorer.

  1. Close all the Internet Explorer and other active applications
  2. Start the Internet Explorer
  3. Delete WebRDC.dll(WebRDCtl Class)
    [Tool]-->[Internet Option]-->[General]-->[Setting]-->[Object]-->(Open the folder)-->[WebRDCtl Class]-->Right click-->[Delete]-->Close the opened folder.
  4. Delete Internet Explorer Cache (temporary Internet Files)
    [Cancel] (Close the control panel)-->[Delete files]-->[Delete all the offline contents] --> Check --> [OK]
  5. Remove Internet Explorer's access to the network
    1. Write down the current settings information of the Connect tab
    2. [Connect]-->[LAN setting]-->[Auto configuration]-->[Auto detect the setting]-->Uncheck
    3. [Auto configuration script]-->Uncheck
    4. [Use proxy server to LAN]-->Check
    5. Input invalid value in [Address] and [Port] (Such as:127.0.0.1 8080)
    6. [OK]-->[OK]
  6. Intentionally force an error loading Easy Web Browsing
    Input Easy Web Browsing start URL in the address bar of Internet Explorer, it will appear error message of [The page cannot access properly].
  7. Close Internet Explorer
  8. Restart Internet Explorer
  9. Restore Internet Explorer's access to the network
    [Tool]-->[Internet Option]-->[Connect]--> Restore the settings recorded in Step 4 part 1

In Windows Vista/7.

When the main Easy Web Browsing (not including voice synthesis programs) is installed on a client PC, program files, setting files, and temporary files are saved to the following directories:

%ProgramFiles%\IBM\WebRD (Example: C:\Program Files\IBM\WebRD) %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Programu Files\IBM\WebRD %APPDATA%\WebRD %TEMP%\Low

The below are the steps of uninstall in Windows Vista/7.

The deletion of Voice synthesis engine program

Go into [Control panel]-->[Programs] and delete the following applications. (If it is being used by the system, you may not be able to delete it. If you are using IBM ViaVoice TTS with other applications, do not delete it.)

Delete the Executable files Delete the setting files Delete the following files and directories in %APPDATA%\WebRD.

* %XXX% corresponds to the current environment settings of the OS. Execute set command alone in Command Prompt to display these settings.

Delete the plug-in

Go through the following steps to delete the ActiveX plug-in WebRDC.dll (WebRDCtl Class) in Internet Explorer 7.

  1. Close all the Internet Explorer and other active applications
  2. Start the Internet Explorer
  3. Delete WebRDC.dll(WebRDCtl Class)
    • [Tool]-->[Internet Option]-->[General]-->[Delete]-->[Delete All]-->[Delete files and settings that have been stored by Add-ons]-->Check-->[Yes]-->[OK] -->Close the Internet Option dialog.
    • [Tool] -->[Manage Add-ons] -->[Enable or Disable Add-ons] -->[Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer](the Show list)--> Delete [WebRDCtl Class(Enable)] -->[Add-ons Installer] :Continue--> [OK]
      Check if [WebRDCtl Class] is enable before deleting it. If it is disable, enable it first.
  4. Close the Internet Explorer.
